Ahhhh...the Texas Blues! Does it get any better? The Lone Star State was home to amazing artists such as Albert Collins, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Lightnin' Hopkins, T-Bone Walker, Janice Joplin, Billy Gibbons, Freddie King, Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, Big Mama Thornton, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Jimmie Vaughan and Stevie Ray Vaughan, just to mention a few. The Texas blues are a blend of gritty, in-your-face lead guitar, smooth slide guitar, tight rythm sections, lightning-fast keyboards, whailing harmonicas and crisp horns, often incorporating a shuffle rythm or slow swing that separates the style from Chicago, Memphis or Delta blues. Although Texas is a big state with big talent, many great blues artists born elsewhere made Texas their home as they discovered a fertile market for their craft. One notable example, Sam Meyers, legendary harmonica player from Jackson, MS, made Dallas his home in 1986 until his passing July 17th, 2006.
The purpose of the Texas Blues Association is to promote Texas blues artists, native or not, that chose Texas as their home and Texas Blues as their style. We hope this site will help blues fans find where to go to hear some of the best blues on the planet. Some of the venues listed host "blues jams" and "open mic nights" where local budding blues artists can hone their chops and seasoned pros can dazzle an audience. We also encourage blues players from all over the country to come and participate while visiting the Republic of Texas.
